Clansman Manipulators have been designed from the start to be reliable in the most demanding working conditions. Manipulator technology was first developed by General Electric more than 25 years ago in the USA but there has been little fundamental development since then. Existing users of Manipulators are satisfied with speed and dexterity but profoundly dissatisfied with reliability.

 

The Costs of Poor Reliability


There are many examples of the costs of unreliable manipulator technology:

  • One French automobile foundry spends over US$60,000 on annual maintenance per machine when machine replacement cost is less than US$300,000
  • One US foundry suffers on average 2 hours of maintenance intervention per 10 hours of operation of the manipulator.

When the costs of disruption to production are considered the costs of poor reliability are even higher.

 

How does Clansman achieve reliability?

 

Manipulators are complex structures with 6 axes of movement. The calculation of forces and moments without a full and proven computer program involves making too many dangerous assumptions which have led to failures with competitors' manipulators.

Clansman Dynamics have developed such a computer program and verified the results with scale models and strain gauge testing of prototypes. Good mechanical design based on full knowledge and the correct design criteria is the key to success.

Clansman takes further steps to protect the manipulator. Mechanical shock absorbers are built into every manipulator as standard. Specially developed hydraulic and control techniques reduce the forces and stresses acting on the structure.
